Milton Ambrose Maxwell, born on May 6, 1944, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, passed away on October 17, 2024, in Carbondale, Illinois, surrounded by his loving family. The youngest of eight siblings, Milton grew up in a faith-filled home and was deeply devoted to Christianity throughout his life. He attended the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, where he met and later married Sandra LaDawn on June 1, 1969. They shared 55 years of marriage and had two daughters.
Milton earned a master’s degree from Southern Illinois University and began a distinguished career in criminal justice. He became the first Black Chief Managing Officer of the First Judicial Circuit Probation Division and was later appointed to the Illinois Prisoner Review Board, serving for 19 years.
A member of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Milton enjoyed active involvement in church leadership and community organizations. He cherished family time and loved sports, fishing, golfing, and supporting teams like the Golden State Warriors and Kansas City Chiefs.
Milton leaves behind his wife Sandra, daughters Plesetta and LaKeista, grandchildren, siblings, and many beloved extended family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, several siblings and close friends. Milton will be remembered as a kind, devoted family man, a trailblazer in his field, and a Southern gentleman with a deep love for faith and service.
Final arrangements were lovingly entrusted to Southern Cremation and Burial Services of Murphysboro, Illinois.
