Darnell Smith

Darnell Smith affectionately known as “Cowboy” departed this life on June 23, 2024, at 7:42 pm in Saint Louis University Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri.

He was born on April 14,1956 in Memphis, Tennessee, to the late Mack and Dorcas (Jones) Smith Sr. 

Darnell accepted Christ at an early age and praised Jesus until his death. 

Darnell was married to Lilly Pearl Pope and was later married to Patrice Smith. He enjoyed helping people, horseback riding, gardening, drawing, working on cars, cooking and music. He had a fondness for all animals. Darnell’s favorite thing to do was dance. When he hit the dance floor, he electrified the room. Darnell was a true gentleman, best known for tipping his cowboy hat. He loved everyone and only wanted love in return.

Darnell leaves to mourn his daughters, April Ann Pope, Darnyall Latrice Pope, Vickie Pope, Pumpkin Pope, Brandy Shelly; and one son, Jeremy Shelly, a host of beloved grandchildren; one brother, Frank (Janie) Smith; and three sisters, Emma Jean Wyatt, Linda (Harrison) Cook, Patricia Smith-Matting; several aunts, cousins, many nieces, nephews and some very special friends.

Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same as God calls us one by one the chain will link again.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at 1:00 pm at United Methodist Church, 1500 Pine St., Murphysboro, IL 62966 with Pastor Christopher Swims, officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery of Murphysboro, Illinois. A viewing will be held from 11:00 am until the funeral hour.
