Bennie Scott

July 15, 1939 — December 23, 2024

Carbondale

Bennie Scott was called home to a place of Eternal Rest on Monday, December 23, 2024, at the age of 85 at Deaconess Hospital in Henderson, Kentucky. He was born on July 15, 1939, to the late Pervie Sr. and Lily (Cole) Scott in Earle, Arkansas.

Bennie accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully on both the Deacon and Trustee boards. He was also a dedicated member and Deacon of New Life Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

Throughout his life, Bennie held many positions in the workforce, each marked by his hard work and dedication. He made history as the First Black Supervisor at the Koppers' Tie Plant, worked as a Coal Miner for over 20 years, and, in his later years, worked as a school bus driver before retiring.

Bennie enjoyed simple pleasures, including mowing his lawn, walking at the mall with his walking buddies, and spending time with his family. He loved being surrounded by those he held dear, and his joy for life was infectious to all who knew him.

He leaves behind his loving children, Delano (Claudia) and Darren (Jessica) Scott; grandchildren, Olivia, Keashon, Delano Aaron, Alexander, and Myles; his sister, T-reetha Scott; brother-in-law, Andrew (Cheryl) Smith; sister-in-law, Hazel Johnson; and close friends, Lee Thomas Jr., Arthur Gibbs, and Don Skouby.

Bennie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leon, Cleo, Pervie Jr. “Scottie”, and Robert Scott; sisters, Martha Ann Scott, Fannie Bee Scott, Katherine Scott Ealy, Christine Scott Murphy, Mary Scott Durrell, Rosetta Scott Brooks, and Janey-Ree Scott. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wives, Willie (Green) Scott and Loretta (Smith) Scott.

Bennie Scott's legacy of faith, family, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He was a man of great character, love, and dedication, and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and community.
